Crested dwarf iris is a common
woodland flower in the eastern United States, from Maryland to Georgia on the east coast
extending west to Indiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missisippi. It grows primarily on upland wooded hillsides, usually in clusters.
The pictures on this page were taken in mid-April in Western
North Carolina, off the Blue Ridge Parkway (top picture) and in the Nantahala National
Forest (picture below).
My flora lists the blooming period as April-May. Wikipedia
transposes the first parts of the name and instead of "Crested Dwarf Iris" calls
it "Dwarf Crested Iris." I don't know which form of the name is more common.
