Fire Pink (Silene
virginica) is a spectacularly bright and eye-catching flower on many wooded
slopes, river banks and roadsides in eastern United States. The picture on this page was taken in the Pisgah National Forest
outside Barnardsville, North Carolina.
As is often the case, the naming of this flower is a bit of
a mystery. Also known as "Indian Pink," the flower is, as you can tell by the
picture, as red as red can be. Nothing pink about it what-so-ever. (If anything, it's a
bit orangey.)
My flora says that "it is a weak perennial
but makes a spectacular addition to your native garden if allowed to reseed and maintain a
visible presence." (Source: 'Wildflowers of North Carolina')
