Primarily a
flower of the dry plains of central and western United States, the strikingly gorgeous
Indian Blanket flower can also be found on the east coast from Virginia to Florida.
Indian Blanket is a shortlived annual flower
(redundant, yes, I know). It makes up for it short live span by seeding itself profusely.
I remember the first time I saw Indian Blanet
flowers growing on the road sides in Colorado - or it could have been New Mexico or
Wyoming, I'm not sure - I thought they were some form or horticultural hybrid escaped from
culivation. For surely, there could be no natural wild flower with such striking,
beautiful and large flowers. Especially on such a frail looking plant growing in such a
dry climate.
