The pictures of the Pincushion flower on this page are of cultivated specimens in Western North Carolina. However, I have seen many of these in the wild in southwestern Sweden, where I grew up.

Also known as "Pigeon scabious," "Small scabious," or "Dove pincushion," the Pincushion flower can be found as a popular perennial in many American nurseries, sold as "Butterfly Blue Pincushion Flower."

The Pincusion flower is native to large parts of Europe, from southern Scotand and Scandinavia down to the Mediterranean region. It prefers well-drained alkaline lime stone soils. As a horticultural plant in the United States, it was awared the 2000 Perennial Plant of the Year Award by the Perennial Plant Association.
