These pictures of the Pink
Lady's Slipper were taken on the Rattlesnake Lodge Trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway
outside Asheville, Norh Carolina.
The Pink Lady's Slipper flowers in May in
this area. In other areas where it grows, it may flower between April and July.
Pink Lady's Slipper grows most commonly in
dry forests, often in mats of humus soil covering rocky ground. It can be found in the
United States from Georgia to Alabama and northward up to Maine and Minnesota. In Canada,
it can be found from Newfoundland to Saskatchewan.
Pink Lady's Slipper is one of the largest
orchids in North America. Like all native orchid species, it propagates poorly and should
never be picked (even if it appears to be abundant). |
