These Showy orchises grew in the
Nantahala National Forest of Western North Carolina. They may not have wanted to be
photographed because no matter what I tried, I could not get a clear focus on the flowers
with my camera. But even in these fuzzy images, it's a beautiful flower. Showy orchis grows in rich, damp woods. In the United States, it can
be found from New England to Minnesota in the north and from Georgia to Alabama in the
south. In Canada, it grows from New Brunswick to Ontario.
These plants were photographed in the wild in mid-April. My
flora says the flowering period of Showy orchis may be from April to June, presumabely
flowering later in the more northern parts of its range.
