The picture of the Wake Robin (Trillium
erectum) to the left was taken near Max Patch, Western North Carolina. Wake Robin is also known as Purple Trillium, Red Trillium, Beth Root or
Stinking Benjamin, in decreasing order of commonality.
Reference books list it as foul-smelling, reminiscent of the
scent of rotting flesh, for the purpose of attracting carion flies. Though I must say, the
ones I've encountered were not in any way repelling. Only mildly odiferous.
Wake Robin grows in eastern North America from Georgia up
the Appalachian mountains to Quebec and Ontario. |
